In Flames @ The Commodore Ballroom - December 14th 2016

Since the release of their twelfth studio album, Battles, In Flames have been filling lots of space on my playlists.

Touring behind the release of that exact album brought the band to Vancouver on Wednesday night and it was glorious.

Anders Fridén, lead singer, and the rest of the maniacal metal musicians delivered a solid, aggressive set that warmed us from the cold snap outside and kept us captivated in through the dark hours of the night.

Co-headlining the night was heavy rock supergroup Hellyeah. This equally energetic group were also on the road behind a new album release, 2016’s Unden!able.

Watching Chad Gray and company work the stage in a feverish onslaught of explosive mayhem was glorious. I have been waiting years to finally see them live and they did not disappoint.

Opening the show were Colorado-base progressive metal outfit Source. I had no previous experience with them but found them musically solid. One of my photographer friends pointed out that they sounded a bit like Maynard’s A Perfect Circle, and I definitely agreed with that. Their drummer was the centre of focus visually, his highly animated style of playing was hypnotic.
