It’s been awhile since Swedish heavy metal band Meshuggah has visited our fair city. If I recall correctly, it was back in 2012 when they were last here.
On Tuesday night they made their return and it was goddamn triumphant.
They stormed the stage as a cohesive unit and delivered devastating walls of instrumentals topped with the brash yet soothing vocals of lead vocalist Jens Kidman.
The term epic came to mind more than once as they powered through their set. Backlit and shrouded in theatrical fog, it was simple and yet I was unable to look away.
Just a great heavy metal show without any bells and whistles, just what Vancouver needed to shake it awake.
Openers Code Orange, an American hardcore punk band hailing from Pennsylvania, started the night with an aggressive performance. The guitar-carrying members were leaping and slamming around the stage like their veins were pumping diesel. The vocals came from the back of the stage where the drummer and keyboardist took turns to screaming their guttural sounds into the mix. They were powerful and explosive, they were the fucking TNT to blow open the night.
