Q&A With Royce 5’9″

Royce 5’9″ has been releasing music for nearly 20 years.

After that amount of time in the game you would assume most people would be slowing down. Not Royce 5’9″, he is speeding up.

In early 2016 he released Layers, which earned him his first No. 1 spot atop Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Now he is about to release a second album for the year, this one is set to be titled Book Of Ryan.

We decided we needed to send him over a little questionnaire, so we could learn a bit more about this hard working legend.

CA: Layers has only been on the streets for a couple of weeks, but you have yet another album slotted for this year, and its set to be called Book of Ryan. How do you keep up that feverish pace of writing?

Royce 5’9″: I’ve had a lot going on over the last few years and haven’t put out any solo music in that time so I guess you could say I had a lot to say.

CA: Did you just have a lot going on personally that fed your writing?

Royce 5’9″: I like to write from what’s going on in my life and so you could say I had and have a lot to say

CA: Having I’m The King and The Alchemist on Grand Theft Auto III seemed to propel your music onto a demographic of listeners that was untapped at the time. Anyone playing GTA3 would hear your songs daily. How did your songs end up get featured in the game?

Royce 5’9″: John Shecter who own Game Records at the time had a relationship with them. I don’t know how they met or how hey decided to use the music but it was before it’s time in terms of marketing and definitely opened up a lot of homes to my music to people who may not have been familiar with my music

CA: With the gaming industry growing exponentially since then GTA3, is that an outlet an artist as yourself would pursue to try and get more songs featured?

Royce 5’9″: Yes there are so any new ways to market you music that it’s important to look at everything

CA: You have been involved in so many collaborations; DJ Premier, Lazarus, Eminem, the list goes on and on. Do you have any new collaborations on the horizon?

Royce 5’9″: I have a few but those are top secret

CA: Has there been anyone you collaborated with, but the end result didn’t work out and nothing was released?

Royce 5’9″: I’m not sure if there is. I can’t think of any off the top of my head. Most if not all of the music has been released

CA:  Is there any artist outside the hip-hop community that you would like to work with?

Royce 5’9″: There’s no artist that’s sticks out right now. I really like the process of collaborating with artist and so I always say my door is totally open to work with anyone in any genre

CA: Over on Reddit there is a very popular community called HipHopHeads. We went over to them, and asked if any fans had some questions, here is what they wanted to know:

Reddit user u/FigotedBaggot – What’s your process in writing bars?

Royce 5’9″: I have to hear a track to write a song but I always think of lines when I’m in the bathroom

Reddit user u/FigotedBaggot – How do you string punchlines and wordplay into them?

Royce 5’9″: I’m a emcee I can’t give that secret away

Reddit user u/Underwater_safe – Do you plan on collaborating with Spark Master Tape?

Royce 5’9″: No plans as of right now

Reddit user u/Drofmot – Royce has a habit of hopping on tracks with people and absolutely killing it. Who’s one person he thinks he thought gave him a run for his money on his own song? (not including Eminem or Slaughterhouse members).

Royce 5’9″: Black Thought

Reddit user u/SmoothieGeneral – How did the collab between Nottz and Asher come about?

Royce 5’9″: Nottz is family. I’ve been working with him for over 10 years and I’ve always been a fan of Asher. Me and Nottz has tons of unreleased music

CA: One thing we ask everyone we talk to; are there any lesser-known or under-appreciated artists that you like or draw inspiration from that you think people should check out? This doesn’t have to be musicians, it could be painters, writers, designers, etc.

Royce 5’9″: I’m obviously partial to anyone related to Bad Half Entertainment artist like my little brother Vishis but I’m a huge fan of Conway, Roc Marciano and Westside Gunn just to name a few people

CA: We work with an organization called Music Heals, and they help bring music therapy to those that can benefit from it. One thing they ask people to do in an effort to spread their name is to finish this sentence – “Music Makes Me….”

Royce 5’9″: Feel that all things are possible
