The State of Minnesota was well represented at Victoria BC’s Sugar Nightclub on September 13th Minneapolis hip-hop duo Atmosphere and their Rhymesayers label mates Brother Ali, deM atlaS w/ with Plain Ole Bill & Last Word were in the house in support of Atmosphere’s “Freshwater Fly Fishermen Tour” The usually quiet Victoria Tuesday evening was anything but quiet, Atmosphere Producer Ant and lyricist/rapper Slug had the crowd into a near frenzy. Front man Sean Daley (aka Slug) owned the sold out crowd right from the start and never ever let go.
By the time I made it through the long lines and heavy security then finally up the stairs into Sugar Nightclub, deM atlaS was already on stage and with the strict 3 song rule in effect was able to get a only few shots in before being evicted from the Photo Pit. I watched the rest of deM atlaS’s show from FOH, and was blown away at how amazing Josh Turner (aka deM atlaS) is, this guy is going to be huge, great stage presence and a Victoria crowd favorite for sure.
Next up was Rhymesayers’ favorite son Brother Ali, Victoria fans had high expectations and he never disappoints. Ali’s incredible stage presence filled the intimate Sugar Nightclub. I love how Ali doesn’t hesitate to interact with the crowd, that’s one of the reasons Victoria loves this half-blind, Albino, Muslim rapper so much. There was a sense of “togetherness” within the club. Ali gave Victoria another heartfelt performance.
When the show ended and I walked down the stairs into the night and fresh air, I was thinking about what Slug rapped
“Every day can’t be the best day – do what you can right now, don’t hesitate”
Well today was the best day
