Billy Talent + Monster Truck + The Dirty Nil @ Grey Eagle Event Centre – February 18th 2017

The first act to kick off the night was, Dirty Nil, a rock trio that hail from Dundas, Ontario. The trio is made up of Luke Bentham, guitar and vocals, David Nardi, bass and vocals and Kyle Fisher, drums. They are currently touring with their early 2016 release Higher Power. It’s a solid album with a great rock/punk fusion style.

Next up was rock band, Monster Truck from Hamilton, Ontario.  Band members include lead singer and bassist Jon Harvey, guitarist Jeremy Widerman, keyboardist Brandon Bliss and drummer Steve Kiely. This band has certainly been building momentum since the debut  of their LP The Brown. They even picking up a Juno Award along the way for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2013. Their music has been featured on TV shows, video games, and even as the goal song for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their most recent album “Sittin’ Heavy” went into production after their tour with Alice in Chains back in 2014. This is a solid album with heavy riffs and a 70’s rock grunge style that is getting more and more air play on the radio. Check these guys out, they’re here to stay!

Billy Talent was up next as the headliners for their Afraid of Heights Tour.  The stage set up was quite elaborate with a massive backdrop with ramps and featured album cover artwork, very impressive. When the band took the stage it was like a bomb went off. The first note was hit hard and set the tone for the rest of the night. The crowd responded with an equal level of energy. It was hard to believe when lead singer, Benjamin Kowalewicz was telling the crowd in between songs he’s been at this for 25 years.  These guys put on an incredible live show, and run as a very well oiled machine. The band and crowd fed off each other’s energy throughout the entire set. There was lots of crowd surfing including a young man in a wheelchair who eventually ended up on stage with band. Last and not least, a special thank you was given to Alexisonfire drummer, Jordan Hastings, for filling in for Billy Talent Drummer, Aaron Solowoniuk, currently on hiatus from the band due to an MS relapse. Congrats on an epic show and wishing Billy Talent all the best on the remaining dates of their Afraid of Heights Tour!
