American blues guitarist and singer Buddy Guy performing at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, BC on Monday, April 22nd, 2019 as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival curated by the Coastal Jazz & Blues Society.
The night was a compilation of laughter and soulful blues.
Mr. Guy has a wonderful stage presence. He is warm and heartfelt during and in between songs, just a class act all around.
He sported his tan Fender and his usual black polka dot shirt, as he served up gut wrenching blues from every cell in his body, seemingly effortlessly.
Watching his fingers flow across the frets or his face contort with the notes was both beautiful and powerful. He is a master and witnessing him live was a pleasure.
For me, one of the truest high points of the evening was hearing him perform a delicate version of “Feels Like Rain”. There was this slight shake in his vibrato that wrought it with a sort of heartache. It was touching and it took a for the goosebumps across my neck to settle down.
I had waited a long time to see Buddy Guy perform live. It seemed like every time he was coming to Vancouver, I was unable to attend. This time my car broke down earlier in the day, but I didn’t let that stop me. I made it down to the show and was met with a truly inspiring performance from a legend.
Thank you to Buddy and his team for a great night out.
