Khruangbin, the Houston-based psychedelic funk rock trio, recently released A La Sala, their fourth studio album and first in four years, via Dead Oceans in partnership with Night Time Stories Ltd.  Hot on the heals of the release, they hit the road on a North American tour.  The trio stopped by Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh NC last Tuesday night before making their way to a weekend appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival.

Khruangbin’s performance in Raleigh was positively entrancing. Laura Lee’s hypnotic bass lines, Mark Speer’s masterful guitar riffs, and DJ Johnson’s locked in drumming captivated the packed amphitheater. They created a sonic tapestry of cinematic instrumental rock and funky grooves that was equal parts chilled out and exhilarating. Khruangbin’s effortlessly cool performance left everyone in attendance rolling in the waves of good vibes resonating from the stage.

Opening the evening fell to the musical vision of Southern California-based jazz musician John Carroll Kirby.  The expressive keyboardist won over the crowd with a fun arrangement of soulful yet vibey psychedelic funk and jazz
