Kimbra, perhaps best known for her song “Settle Down” and her work on Gotye’s #1 hit single “Somebody That You Used To Know,” can put on a show. Is it a pop show? Jazz? Rock? We wouldn’t want to put a label on it even if we could! A little bit each, probably. But it’s often experimental, includes a banger or two, and is never, ever, boring.

One of the staples of a Kimbra concert is her use of looping to re-create her songs live on stage. Years ago, at the Imperial, she did this to great effect with her song “Real Life.” This week she rebuilt her aforementioned hit “Settle Down” using a series of vocal beats to create something that is slightly different every show. “I never know where it’ll go” she joked. Seeing an artist build something piece by strange piece into something instantly recognizable is incredibly captivating, and almost worth the ticket price itself. The fact that she can blend that in so well with empowered, in your face tracks like “Top of The World” speaks to her talent and time spent on tour over the last 15 years.

We hope you enjoy a few photos of the show, which you can find below! Thanks to Timbre Concerts for having us out, check out their upcoming shows – here.

We were also lucky to catch a few minutes of Grimm, a Vancouver-based experimental pop music project started in 2020 by lead singer Sam Herle. Filling in for Tei Shi, who was unable to open for Kimbra that night, Grimm seemed incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support an artist they so vocally respected and in their home town, no less! We managed to snap a few shots before their set ended and hope you enjoy them.
