Earlier this year The Black Keys, the Grammy award winning indie blues rock duo of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums), released Dropout Boogie, their eleventh studio album. With the album receiving positive acclaim, the Black Keys have hit the road on a North American tour. This past Thursday night, Sept. 1, 2022, the duo stopped at the Coastal Credit Union Music Park in Raleigh NC.
After a hilarious intro video starring comedian David Cross as a Christian patriot urging fans to avoid the “Dropout” tour and escape the evil influence of the Black Keys and their music, the band came out, slammed their foot on the accelerator, and never let up through a 22 song set that while focused on more recent releases, still found a balance that satisfied the rabid fans, both old and new.
Birmingham, Alabama’s Early James started the evening, showcasing songs from his sophomore album, Strange Time To Be Alive, which was produced by Dan Auerbach. Holding down the “middle child” spot fell to South Carolina indie rock stalwarts, Band of Horses. Despite songwriter and frontman Ben Bridwell, admitting to the crowd that he caused the band to miss soundcheck, they sounded great, were well received by the crowd, and provided a solid lead-in to the Black Keys.
