Earlier this year, Superchunk released What a Time to Be Alive, their 11th album and the follow-up to 2013’s I Hate Music. The album is a raw rage-fired dose of punk driven indie rock that crackles with energy from start to finish, ultimately providing a cathartic experience. With critics and fans alike praising the ferocious new album, Superchunk hit the road for a Spring North American tour. We caught their triumphant hometown return when the tour stopped at a sold-out Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro NC.
We have managed to catch numerous Superchunk shows over the years, but the Friday night performance at the Cradle was something special. The entire band was firing on all cylinders and from the opening salvo of “I Got Cut” and “Reagan Youth,” it was clear that this was not an ordinary show. The band were a wave of fire and fury from the first notes. They pegged the energy level at 11, and never let up throughout a solid set that mixed new songs with fan favorites.
The evening was opened by Rock*A*Teens, the Georgia-based indie rockers who previewed some new songs from their forthcoming album, Sixth House, due out June 29th on Merge Records
