Today, Joey Bada$$ returns to share a new trilogy of singles and a music video. The Light Pack includes new tracks “No Explanation,” “Shine” and “The Light,” and details Joey’s self-imposed time away from music. As he releases his first new music in 3 years, Joey returns reborn with new vigor and picks up right where he left off as one of the most promising rappers the game has seen in years. “The Light” also arrives with an accompanying video directed by Kerby Jean-Raymond and Levi Turner that blends striking documentation of Joey attending a traditional Haitian Voodoo ceremony that took place in Brooklyn before he hits the borough’s streets in an act of protest.
Joey participated in the ceremony in part because of “The Light” co-director Kerby Jean-Raymond, whose Haitian heritage and late aunt being a healer inspired Joey to learn more about Haitian religious rituals. The footage used in the video is his first time meeting those involved in the ceremony, a raw documentation of the true rebirth he experienced that lead him to a deeper connection with his ancestors. Those themes are present across this new trilogy of singles that explore enlightenment of mind, body and soul.
The songs also arrive on the heels of renewed attention being given to his 2017 album ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$, which has revealed itself to be sadly prescient in the context of the protests and social unrest that have swept the United States, as it pulls the veil back on the systemic racism and police brutality that permeate American society.
Watch “The Light” and listen to Joey’s new songs above now. Stay tuned for more from Joey Bada$$ soon.
