Per the official press release –
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have shared the video for their song “Hey Mama”—watch it here: https://bit.ly/2rtERC1. The video stars Nathaniel and (Night Sweats bassist) Joseph Pope III’s mothers as well as the band’s extended Denver family. Shot in Rateliff and Pope’s hometown, Hermann, MO, the video was directed by frequent collaborator Rett Rogers who incorporated intimate family home movies into the clip.
Of the video, Pope says, “I was reticent at first to ask our mothers to have such a prominent role in the video and wanted them to be aware of the potential scrutiny involved with making something so intimate as ‘a day in the life’ so public. In the end, it made me feel much closer to my mother. You grow up within a family’s daily routines and are shaped by them. Nathaniel and I moved away, and we developed our separate lives. To see a day in the life of my mom, through her very eyes, is such an immense gift to me. The themes of thankfulness, loss, struggle and time that are deep within all of our relationships are on display here.”
Rogers adds, “The process of making ‘Hey Mama’ was similar to creating a short documentary—gathering found footage from various sources and documenting the lives of others. I experienced Hermann Missouri, the town where Nathaniel and Joseph were raised, through the eyes of their mothers Sandy and Diane.”
