Live Review: First Aid Kit @ The Anthem – July 14th 2023

Johanna and Klara Söderberg – the Swedish sisters better known as the band First Aid Kit – released their fifth album Palomino last year. The album further refines the pop sensibilities that the duo began to develop in earnest on their previous album, 2018’s Ruins, while still retaining the folk and country influences which permeated their earlier work. The album has been out for eight months now, but North American touring in support it has been a longer time coming. While they did play a short set opening for Lord Huron at Merriweather Post Pavilion last year, Friday night at The Anthem marked their first headlining set in the Washington, DC area since 2018.

Of course waiting for a while after releasing a new album has its advantages – most notably that the audience has had time to get to know the new material and embrace it. Opening the show with two new songs, the title track “Palomino” and “Angel,” the band engaged the packed-out room right away. After that, they alternated between newer and older songs, with tracks from all four of their earlier records making appearances, along with covers of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird” and Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again”. Throughout, the soaring vocal harmonies that have become a trademark of First Aid Kit’s music took center stage.

The sisters were backed by an entirely new band since their last appearance at The Anthem, including a pair of brothers – Johannes Runemark on guitar and Gabriel Runemark on drums – along with keyboardist Freja Drakenberg.

Opening the show was The Weather Station, the project of Canadian singer Tamara Lindeman, who has herself moved in a more pop, orchestrated direction since her early folky releases. She played an all-too-brief seven song set which interestingly focused primarily on her 2021 album Ignorance rather than her more recent 2022 release How Is It That I Should Look At the Stars.
