Live Review: Tears For Fears + Cold War Kids @ Rogers Arena, Vancouver – July 24th 2023

Last night’s concert at Rogers Arena in Vancouver was a captivating journey through the realms of melodic nostalgia and high-octane energy. The evening commenced with an exhilarating performance by Cold War Kids, setting the stage for an enchanting musical experience headlined by Tears For Fears.

Cold War Kids took the stage with an explosion of high energy that instantaneously ignited the crowd. Their infectious sound and dynamic stage presence had many of the patrons on their feet, fully immersed in the pulsating beats and vibrant lights. The backdrop, a simple yet striking 30-foot tall text block proclaiming “Cold War Kids,” provided a visually effective canvas for their performance.

Their set was met with resounding applause and hollering pleasantries from the enthusiastic attendees, as they skillfully closed out their performance. Cold War Kids’ well-received act left an indelible mark on the night, leaving the audience energized and primed for what was yet to come.

And what followed was nothing short of breathtaking. Tears For Fears took the stage with a beautifully orchestrated light show and an awe-inspiring stage setup. A colossal 75-foot tall circular screen served as the backdrop, adorned with powerful, fast-moving, and colorful lighting rigs that lined its circumference. The stage’s exterior consisted of two additional circular rigs that expanded outwards, creating a captivating visual tapestry of lights and textures that enveloped the band, amplifying the mood and emotions of every song. Accompanying streams in the circle screen further enhanced the mesmerizing display, captivating everyone in the audience with intriguing visual beauty.

However, it wasn’t just a visually stunning spectacle; Tears For Fears showcased their musical prowess with a rock-solid and cohesive performance. This was far from a nostalgic money grab; it was a showcase of pure talent and enduring brilliance that resonated deeply with fans of all ages.

Band leads Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith traded turns, delivering their uniquely poignant vocals, while exuding a jovial and passionate energy that translated into an exceptional performance. The setlist was a delightful mix of classic hits like “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Mad World,” as well as lesser-known gems like “Suffer the Children,” featuring the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Carina Round.

As the night drew to a close, the encore was a special treat with an unexpected but soul-stirring cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” followed by the iconic anthem “Shout,” leaving the crowd in absolute euphoria.

In conclusion, the Tears For Fears and Cold War Kids concert at Rogers Arena was an enthralling and memorable experience. Cold War Kids set the stage on fire with their high-octane performance, while Tears For Fears mesmerized the audience with their visually and musically captivating show.
