Live Review: The Hives + Kate Clover + The Aubreys @ The Rickshaw Theatre, Vancouver – November 9th 2023

On the electric night of November 9th, 2023, the intimate confines of Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre were set ablaze by the explosive energy of The Hives. The evening kicked off with a surprise addition to the lineup, The Aubreys, a band still finding its footing but nonetheless delivered a spirited performance, playing their hearts out and contributing a good level of energy to set the stage. Lead singer Finn Wolfhard belted out with passion and fire.

Following them was Kate Clover, a revelation of high energy that caught everyone off guard. The band’s lead singer, Kate Clover, proved to be intense and captivating, commanding the stage with an intensity that left an indelible mark. The lead guitarist, though I’m not sure of their name, carved out a theatrical persona, adding a fun dynamic to the performance. The overall impact was clear – the band won over many new fans in the crowd, leaving a strong desire to witness their energy again.

Then emerged The Hives, and the tiny venue of Rickshaw Theatre transformed into a cauldron of unbridled excitement. Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, the lead singer, was a force to be reckoned with – cocky, explosive, and full of physical energy. He utilized every inch of the stage and its structure, climbing about to maintain an unbroken connection with the audience. Nicholaus Arson, the lead guitarist, matched his brother’s explosive energy, captivating the audience with his relentless enthusiasm.

Chris Dangerous on drums proved to be a rhythmic beast, holding the fort amid the visual spectacle unfolding before him. The crowd engagement was top-notch, and the audience reciprocated the energy in kind. The synergy between the band and the fans created an atmosphere that was almost as raucous as the opening acts.

The setlist was a testament to The Hives’ mastery, featuring hits like “Main Offender,” “Walk Idiot Walk,” and the anthemic “Hate to Say I Told You So.” The encore, culminating in “Tick Tick Boom,” was the explosive climax that left everyone in attendance exhilarated.

The rarity of witnessing such a well-established band in such an intimate venue added an extra layer of magic to the night. The Rickshaw Theatre, a well-known Vancouver concert hub accommodating 500-600 patrons, was packed to capacity with a sold-out crowd. It was a unique opportunity to experience the raw, unfiltered energy of The Hives in close quarters, and the band seized the moment, delivering one of the best shows in recent memory.
