It’s been a few years since I have been chasing down Mr. Odell. He first played the now defunct Media Club in 2013, then The Biltmore Cabaret in fall that same year, and then the Imperial back in 2016. All three times, I had something come up that prevented me from seeing him live.

This time I was lucky enough to catch his show at the Commodore. I was blown away by his performance.

He is able to run the gauntlet during his set from emblazoned passionate, guttural delivery to the lightest, haunting softness. Every single song he played gave me goosebumps at one point.

The best moment of the night was during his performance of “Hold Me” from his 2013 album Another Love. Mr. Odell jumped over the front rail and into the crowd, pushing out towards the middle of the room, and then he climbed on a table. From their, he guided the venue into a sing along, taking a few moments between breaths to reach down and drink a strangers beverage near his feet. (fan shot video below)

The only way I can think to describe this man is a perfect blend of 70’s English super power in musician Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin blended with the unbridled delivery of UK punk-folk singer-songwriter Frank Turner. He has the ability and prowess of Elton, the lyrical fortitude of Taupin, and he sets the stage on fire similarly to Mr. Turner.

I am so glad I caught this show, Tom Odell is a rare gem.

Thank you to Tom and his team for a great night out.
