NE-YO and Akon launched the North American leg of their Nights Like This Tour at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on June 17, delivering a giant, nostalgic celebration of the songs that defined a generation.
Rather than dividing the evening into a traditional opener and headliner format, the two artists took turns controlling the stage. NE-YO would deliver a run of hits, Akon would answer with his own, and the show would continue moving back and forth like a friendly musical competition. It was a smart format for two catalogues this deep, keeping the pace quick and giving the sold-out arena very little opportunity to sit down.
The opening stretch established that rhythm immediately. NE-YO arrived after a brief snippet of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” moving through “Miss Independent,” “Because of You,” “Nobody,” “Champagne Life,” and “One in a Million.” Akon then responded with “Akon’s Beautiful Day,” “Smack That,” “I’m So Paid,” “Locked Up,” and “Soul Survivor.” Within minutes, Rogers Arena had become a constant roar of singalongs, screaming, and bodies bouncing in time.
That energy never really disappeared. There was something wonderfully contagious about hearing so many songs that had been embedded in popular culture for years. Even when I did not know every word, I found myself mouthing whatever pieces I could remember and moving along with the beat. These songs were everywhere during their original runs, and hearing them in succession made it clear just how much musical territory NE-YO and Akon occupied during that era.

The production was equally oversized. Massive video screens filled the stage with close-ups and changing visuals, while an instrumental ensemble added richness to parts of the show. There were towering lighting rigs, thick clouds of stage smoke, flame pots, sparkling fountains, multiple groups of male and female dancers, and an aerial performer who climbed roughly 30 feet above the stage using suspended fabric. Just when it seemed like the production had shown everything it had, another piece of spectacle appeared.
Akon added to that sense of unpredictability by inviting a group of randomly selected fans onto the stage for a song and dance party. It was loose, chaotic, and joyful, briefly erasing the distance between the performers and the thousands watching from the seats. The chosen fans appeared to be having the time of their lives, and the excitement spread through the entire building.
One of the evening’s most entertaining sections had NE-YO and Akon sharing the stage for a playful songwriting battle. They traded songs they had written or helped shape for other artists, moving through selections connected to Mario, David Guetta and Sia, Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. “Let Me Love You,” “Titanium,” “Take a Bow,” “Drunk in Love,” “Irreplaceable,” and “Just Dance” became reminders that their impact reaches much further than the hits released under their own names.
That section was more than a fun medley. It illustrated how deeply both artists helped define the sound of mainstream R&B and pop during the 2000s and early 2010s. Their voices were already familiar, but their songwriting fingerprints were everywhere too. Watching them jokingly compete over those accomplishments gave the audience a quick history lesson without ever slowing down the party.
NE-YO brought the smoothness and precision expected from him. Songs like “Sexy Love,” “So Sick,” “Mad,” “Closer,” and “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself)” gave him room to move between vulnerable balladry and polished dance-pop. Surrounded by dancers and elaborate production, he remained composed and charismatic, carrying himself like a performer who knows exactly how to guide a packed arena.

Akon’s sections had a rougher, more explosive energy. “Bananza (Belly Dancer),” “Bartender,” “Don’t Matter,” “Sorry, Blame It on Me,” “Lonely,” “Right Now (Na Na Na),” and “Beautiful” triggered enormous reactions. His unmistakable voice cut through the room, immediately transporting the audience back to a period when it seemed nearly impossible to turn on the radio without hearing him.
The night was not completely free of technical or production hitches. A few transitions left approximately 30 seconds of empty space between songs, moments when it seemed like the next enormous piece of the production was not quite ready. Since Vancouver marked the launch of the North American leg, it felt like the kind of opening-night wrinkle that will disappear once the machinery has had a few performances to settle in.
More importantly, nobody seemed bothered. The gaps were brief, the crowd remained loud, and the party resumed as soon as the next song landed. With a performance involving this many musicians, dancers, cameras, effects, props, costume changes, and moving parts, a couple of slightly awkward transitions barely registered against the scale of everything that worked.
The final run pushed the evening toward a full release. NE-YO delivered “Let’s Go,” “Time of Our Lives,” and “Give Me Everything,” while Akon brought songs including “I Wanna Love You,” “Sexy Bitch,” and “Til the Sun Rise Up.” The pair then reunited for “Play Hard,” ending the night together after spending most of it happily trying to outdo one another.
There is real pleasure in watching two artists embrace the size of their legacies without treating the night like a museum piece. NE-YO and Akon were not simply standing beneath spotlights and asking nostalgia to do all the work. They surrounded these songs with movement, humour, spectacle, and enough fire to make Rogers Arena feel like an enormous nightclub.
By the end, it was difficult to tell whether the audience was more exhausted from dancing or from trying to sing along with nearly every chorus. It was loud, excessive, occasionally imperfect, and ridiculously fun. If you are looking for a good night out built around era-defining hits and bigger-than-life stage antics, this tour should not be missed.
