Last night, the Hollywood Theatre in Vancouver, BC, played host to the incomparable Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band, who brought their unique blend of comedy and music to an eager and appreciative audience. Known for his offbeat humor and satirical takes on modern life, Tim Heidecker proved once again why he’s a cult favorite, delivering a performance that was equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and downright entertaining.
When Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band finally took the stage, the room erupted with excitement. They kicked off with “Well’s Running Dry,” a track that perfectly captured Heidecker’s blend of absurdity and wit, while The Very Good Band locked into the groove with precision and flair. Their musicianship elevated the performance, turning each song into a theatrical yet intimate experience. Highlights like “Buddy,” “Trippin,” and the hilariously relatable “Hey Would You Call My Mom For Me?” had the crowd swaying and laughing in equal measure, showcasing Heidecker’s knack for finding humor in the mundane.
The Very Good Band wasn’t just a backing group—they were a vital part of the show’s charm. Their chemistry with Heidecker was undeniable, each member adding their own personality to the performance. The tight rhythm section, tasteful guitar licks, and playful keyboard flourishes created a sound that was both polished and loose, perfectly complementing Heidecker’s deadpan delivery. Together, they transformed the night into more than just a comedy show; it was a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the joy of not taking life too seriously.
About halfway through the show, the band took a brief break, and the stage was handed over to comedian Kyle Mooney, who appeared as his character Todd, an aging-out Southern California skater type. Todd’s awkward, cringe-inducing humor had the audience in stitches, his performance a masterclass in uncomfortable comedy. When Heidecker returned to the stage, the two shared a series of hilariously awkward interactions that left the crowd roaring with laughter.
Once Todd exited, Heidecker and The Very Good Band dove back into their set with renewed energy. Tracks like “Cleaning Up the Dog Shit,” “Lord Cain,” and “Bells Are Ringing” kept the momentum going, each song a testament to Heidecker’s ability to blend humor with surprisingly poignant commentary. The band’s tight musicianship added depth to the performance, making it clear that this wasn’t just a comedy show—it was a full-fledged musical experience.
The night reached its peak with the closing number, “Trump’s Private Pilot,” a fan favorite that had everyone singing along. The song’s biting satire and catchy melody were the perfect way to end the set, leaving the audience on a high note.
As the lights came up and the crowd began to filter out, it was clear that Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band had delivered something special. Their ability to seamlessly blend comedy and music, coupled with sharp wit and undeniable stage presence, made for an unforgettable night. Vancouver can only hope it won’t be long before they return to grace the Hollywood Theatre stage once again.
