A Wilhelm Scream with The Flatliners, The Implants + Such Gold @ Constellation Room – June 21st 2013

As I walked into the Constellation room, I was reminded of the time I fractured bone in my foot when I tried to leave a mosh pit at a metal show when a large man stepped on my foot when it was sideways. My foot gave me a weird feeling, as it does whenever I catch a show at this venue. Anyways onto the show.

The first band up was The Implants, the local openers, yet a band filled with members of Pulley, Strung Out and Ten Foot Pole. They got the crowd going with their brand of pop punk, which manifested as a small circle pit of appreciation. I wasn’t really familiar with The Implants prior to the show, but they played with heart and got the crowd amped up so kudos to them.

Such Gold came to the stage next. They played with a sense that they have something to prove, in a good way. They brought energy, which is a statement I could say about all of the bands that evening. The only complaint I really had about them was that last time I saw them open for Strung Out Ben Kotin was without a guitar. His playing was solid, I just feel his ability to engage the crowd is better served by the freedom to move around the stage.

Up third was The Flatliners, who aside from Off With Their Heads, is at the top of my current crop of punk bands list. Their albums are only enhanced by the band’s live show. Lead singer Chris Cresswell’s sense of humor was on display, whether it was joking around with the audience or dedicating a song to an oblivious fan in the front. The audience seemed to know the words to all of their songs, which is the best ingredient for a good punk show. As they were finishing their set with “Count Your Bruises” a crowd surfer kicked Chris’s rig and knocked out his guitar. This didn’t stop the band from chugging on, while singing every word, you could see a solution forming in his mind. He jacked straight into an amp in the back in between verses and didn’t miss a beat.

After three successful sets, the crowd was eager to see A Wilhelm Scream take the stage. While the crowd had been the expected amount a chaotic throughout the night, it went through the roof when A Wilhelm Scream took the stage. Singer Nuno Pereira’s invitation to get on stage and stage dive was taken to heart by many members of the audience. What ensued can only be described as beautiful chaos, with bodies flying all over the place and people with huge smiles on their faces. The biggest smile however could be seen on the face of Nuno, who couldn’t help but look like a child on Christmas morning. After a few songs, and even more elbows to the head and steps on my feet, I was forced to drop to the back to the back of the room. All in all this show made for one hell of a fun night and all of the bands were worth showing up for.

* Weird side note: The Observatory as two rooms, The Constellation Room and the main hall. The show I shot was in The Constellation Room and the band playing in the main hall that night was Bone Thugs N Harmony. So there’s that.
