Mastodon Share “In The Ruins” Ahead Of New Album Marrow Deep

Mastodon have shared “In The Ruins,” the latest single from their upcoming album Marrow Deep, out August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings.

The song arrives with a vivid animated video from animation and VFX studio Hey Beautiful Jerk, following a single-eyed creature named Frank through flooded and broken landscapes. It is strange, colourful, unsettling, and oddly beautiful, which feels very much in line with where Mastodon are heading on this new chapter.

“In The Ruins” was inspired by the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene and the personal damage it caused for bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and his family. The storm severely flooded their home, destroyed personal belongings, and led to a long period of displacement. That pain arrived alongside a heavy stretch for the band, who were also processing the loss of founding member Brent Hinds and the passing of drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother, Michele Lawrence.

That grief sits at the centre of Marrow Deep, but this does not sound like a band collapsing under the weight of it. It sounds like a band pushing through it. The album finds Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher emerging from years of upheaval with something expansive, emotionally heavy, and creatively recharged.

The record also marks Mastodon’s first full-length album to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, with major contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. The guest list is massive too. Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme appears on “Snakes For Dinner,” Neil Fallon of Clutch lends spoken word to “The Three Fates,” Randy Blythe of Lamb of God and Nate Newton of Converge add gang vocals to “A Vampire’s Demeanor,” Converge drummer Ben Koller appears on “Barbarians Blood,” and Black Sabbath legend Geezer Butler plays the intro on “The Vanishing,” which also features Joe Duplantier of Gojira.

That is a ridiculous amount of heavy music gravity in one album.

Mastodon will support the release with The Poisonous Weapons Tour this fall, joined by Deafheaven and Alcest on all dates. The run begins September 16 in Orlando and includes Canadian stops in Montreal and Toronto before wrapping October 24 at Sick New World Dallas.
